Walsh Construction and University of Kentucky celebrate topping out of new Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building

Lexington, Kentucky – Walsh Construction and the University of Kentucky celebrated the topping out of its new UK HealthCare Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building. University leaders, state officials, project partners and members of the construction team gathered as the final signed steel beam was lifted into place, marking a major milestone for the 550,000-square-foot facility. Walsh Construction is delivering the project alongside HGA Architects and Engineers and Champlin Architecture.

The new building will bring outpatient cancer services, which are currently spread across six areas of the UK campus together into one location. The facility will become the new home of the UK Markey Cancer Center and will include chemotherapy infusion, radiation medicine, multidisciplinary oncology, imaging, laboratory services, pharmacy and rehabilitation. It will also provide expanded space for precision medicine, cellular therapy and early-phase clinical trials, along with a Comprehensive Spine Center and a dedicated ambulatory surgery floor.

“This new facility isn’t just bricks and mortar,” said Eric Radloff, vice president at Walsh Construction. Radloff explained that the building will become a place where families bring loved ones for help, patients receive the care they need and healthcare professionals have the tools and spaces needed to perform their best work. He also recognized the people responsible for reaching the milestone, adding, “Milestones like this give us a chance to acknowledge the people who made this possible.” Radloff thanked the construction crews, engineers, architects, project managers and others who worked through early mornings, late nights and changing weather conditions to keep the project moving forward.

Designed with patients and families at the center, the facility will reduce the need to travel between multiple buildings for appointments, treatments, imaging and consultations. The project will expand access to advanced cancer care and specialized outpatient services throughout Kentucky, helping more families receive nationally recognized care closer to home. The building and an adjacent 2,400-space parking structure are scheduled to open for patient care in 2028.
