CHICAGO, IL – Walsh Construction crews have placed an architecturally exposed structural steel canopy atop the Chicago Transit Authority's Belmont Blue Line Station, a featured component of the $17 million station renovation project. The canopy is more than 85-feet-long and weighs approximately 145 tons. To maintain regular station operations, the canopy was assembled adjacent to its final location on temporary shoring and then moved using Mammoet’s self-propelled modular transporter. Designed by Ross Barney Architects, the canopy is meant to serve as a community gateway while visually enhancing the street-level entrance. Station renovations will include repaved surfaces, new LED lighting and new signage to improve the speed of bus boarding. This is the first major renovation of the Belmont Blue Line Station since it opened nearly 50 years ago.
