Sherman Hospital is a $325 million replacement hospital in Elgin, IL. The 650,000 SF facility includes a state of the art cancer treatment center, medical office building, 6-story inpatient bed tower with 255 private rooms, and a more efficient emergency department. The hospital is at the forefront of current technology and medical safety for its patients. Preventing medical errors is critically important, and the uniform design of the hospital aids in achieving this goal.
The facility was developed around a green statement including environmental green landscaping and a geothermal lake. The landscaping is based on native prairie plantings, which means there is no maintenance for the facility, and it provides a natural soothing environment for the patients. The 15-acre geothermal lake behind the facility uses the water for heating and cooling the facility to conserve electricity; a savings of $1 Million per year. A forerunner in the continuing trend of green practices and minimizing carbon footprints, this lake is the largest geothermal health care project in the world.
