Contract Awarded For Lejeune High School Renovation

A major renovation and addition at Lejeune High School will soon begin aboard Camp Lejeune.
A $40.8 million contract was awarded March 16 to Walsh Federal LLC for the construction project for Lejeune High School.
“The project will be a 151,000-square-foot comprehensive renovation with some demolition and additions,” said Susan Brinson, a facilities engineer for the Department of Defense Education Activity or DoDEA.
The project is to take place on the existing 75-acre school campus.
Brinson said the design incorporates DoDEA’s 21st Century style learning communities, which includes flexible spaces that can be adapted to the meet student needs, from small one-on-one learning rooms to movable walls that can open spaces to shared common areas and group learning spaces.
A two-story addition will include four hubs with each hub surrounded by four or five studios (classroom areas).
Along with the space for standard classroom functions, the project will include additional specialized areas such as science rooms, a culinary arts room, art room, JROTC room, gymnasium and common area.
Overall, about 50,000 square feet of the existing school will be demolished and 72,000 square feet will see extensive renovation. Another 79,000 square feet will be new construction, Brinson said.
Brinson said paperwork is still being finalized and she does not know an starting date but once the project starts, the contract calls for its completion within three years.
The work is to be done in phases and while school operations are ongoing. Part of the details will be plans for safety on the site and completion of work with as little disruption to school operations as possible.
