The contract value is over $900 million and includes two large-scale rapid transit system extension projects and a 90,000 SF 2-story service and inspection facility to house maintenance and operation controls. Both rail contracts include a total of 25.8 miles of new light rail double track guideway, 14 at grade stations, 5 elevated passenger stations, 3 elevated bridge structures, 1.2 million SF of bridge deck, and 524 spans. The Dan Ryan expressway was first designed in 1963 with just over 150,000 vehicles travelling on the roadway. By the new millennium, it had surpassed its intended design life by more than 20 years. With traffic exceeding 300,000 vehicles daily, the Dan Ryan became unable to meet its demands. The contract included pavement and barrier wall replacement, reconstruction of local access roads, 15 flyover bridge replacements, sewers and drainage systems, signage, and landscaping. With over 300,000 cubic yards of concrete, this $975 million project has been recognized as one of the largest road construction projects in the nation. It was also a recipient of the Matthew Myles Walsh Founders award....

Walsh Construction was the original design/builder of the 33-story structure that accommodated 4,400 occupants. Twelve years later, we are now the construction manager expanding it to 57 stories and 8,000 occupants. Walsh managed all aspects of the original building design and construction including value-engineering services to assist in achieving all of the owner’s architectural design objectives. Future vertical expansion was factored into the original construction with accommodations built into the foundation and superstructure, various mechanical systems, and the vertical transportation system. A 24-floor expansion over an occupied building is very rare, and this is the first of its kind in the city of Chicago. Watch this video to see how Walsh accomplished this historic project with unique logistical challenges while preserving public and employee safety and security....

This is the largest of 10 contracts in the I-355 South Extension Corridor Improvement Plan. The 6,600 foot long Des Plaines River Bridge spans 3 rivers, 2 railroads, and 3 roadways and carries 6 lanes of traffic over the town of Lemont, IL. It is the 2nd longest bridge in Illinois, and the 612 post tension girders are some of the largest in the US varying in length from 90 – 170 feet and weighing up to 256,000 pounds....

Walsh was the General Contractor for the creation of this 60-foot diameter sunken caisson pump station, concrete spillway, and an intake structure that serves to transport water from the retention pond at O’Hare north airfield to the nearby Willow Higgins Creek. It is part of the $6.6 Billion O’Hare Modernization Plan. The sunken caisson method was used to set the basin structure at a grade of 65 feet below ground level. Watch the video to view the process behind this innovative approach to the project....

The RDU Terminal C project consists of a 920,000 SF terminal and concourse facility featuring over 30 boarding gates that will accommodate 12 billion passengers per year; triple the size of the original terminal. Every supervisor shall be aware of the safety performance demonstrated by the employees under his/her supervision....

Sherman Hospital is a $325 million replacement hospital in Elgin, IL. The 650,000 SF facility includes a state of the art cancer treatment center, medical office building, 6-story inpatient bed tower with 255 private rooms, and a more efficient emergency department. The hospital is at the forefront of current technology and medical safety for its patients. Preventing medical errors is critically important, and the uniform design of the hospital aids in achieving this goal.
The facility was developed around a green statement including environmental green landscaping and a geothermal lake. The landscaping is based on native prairie plantings, which means there is no maintenance for the facility, and it provides a natural soothing environment for the patients. The 15-acre geothermal lake behind the facility uses the water for heating and cooling the facility to conserve electricity; a savings of $1 Million per year. A forerunner in the continuing trend of green practices and minimizing carbon footprints, this lake is the largest geothermal health care project in the world....

Walsh was part of the joint venture that rebuilt this 40-year-old structure destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The $283 million concrete bridge is over 2 miles long and was built at a much higher elevation to avoid future damage by hurricanes and storm surges. The new bridge has a clearance of 35 feet from the water at its lowest point to the bottom of its girders and 85 feet at its navigation span. Walsh overcame the arduous conditions of the devastated Mississippi Gulf Coast to complete the storm resistant bridge on schedule and on budget....

Walsh served as the prime contractor of the $175 million reconstruction of a 6-mile stretch of I-70 in Indianapolis. This heavily congested section of the roadway, on which approximately 180,000 cars travel each day, was constructed in the early 1970s and has never been rebuilt. As a result, the pavement and bridge decks were deteriorating. Another problem was that motorists could not see around its dangerous curves, so the roadway had to be built to meet federal standards. Shoulders were widened to 14 feet and vertical clearances were widened and raised. This is one of the most aggressive construction projects in INDOT’s history....

Walsh Construction’s rise to preeminence in the construction business began with the arrival of Matthew Myles Walsh in Chicago in 1893. He came to the city to be a carpenter in the World’s Fair. Five years later, Walsh Construction was founded in Matthew’s garage. Over the next few decades, the company established itself as a small but well-regarded Chicago building contractor. Walsh survived the difficulties of the great depression, and in 1955 the company had almost ten employees and established its headquarters at the intersection of Archer and Western. By 1970, the company’s earnings had grown to $1M per year, and Matthew’s two sons took the reins. In 1979, Walsh landed its first heavy civil job. Today, as the fourth generation of Walshs assume key leadership positions, the company continues to play an important role in the ever changing face of Chicago....
