Walsh served as the lead contractor for the reconstruction of 6.65 miles of US Route 22/322 in the Lewistown Narrows between Mifflin and Juniata Counties. This $110 million project is the second largest construction project ever awarded by PennDOT. Walsh successfully overcame challenges of the site geology, and construction staging allowed the roadway to be opened to traffic nine months ahead of schedule. The project had limited traffic detour options, which required Walsh to stage construction activities to allow one lane of traffic in each direction through the construction zone during peak travel periods. The project included removal of 2,000,000 CY of rock and earth and the construction of 285,000 SF of MSE wall – the largest MSE wall installation in the US. It also included over 9,000 LF of cast in place retaining wall, requiring 8,882 micro piles and 4,400 driven steel H-piles. Walsh self performed all earthwork, retaining wall, MSE wall, pile work, and concrete paving.
