This 7-mile long road reconstruction and rehabilitation project is located on I-85 between the Perimeter, I-285, and Senoia Road, SR74. This stretch of I-85 is four lanes wide. Work included removal and replacement of the outside lanes (200,000 SY) and rehabilitation and patching (1,600 CY) of the inside two lanes. Additional items included upgrades of all guardrail (20,000 LF), bridge side barrier (800 LF), the addition of a 12’ wide concrete shoulder (100,000 SY), and the addition of approximately 7 miles of glare screen on the existing center median barrier. One notable requirement of this project, a first in the state, is that all work taking place adjacent to a live travel lane must be protected by use of “Quick Movable Barrier.” This is a proprietary protection barrier which is deployed and removed quickly in a zipper-like fashion; 1 mile of barrier wall can be deployed from the shoulder of the road in about an hour. This barrier afforded work crews and the traveling public a much safer work zone than with barrel closures.
