Six months after the US 90 Bridge over St. Louis Bay was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, the Joint Venture of Archer Western Contractors and Granite Construction Company was awarded this design/build contract to replace the bridge. The contract also included removing what remained of the original structure. The new concrete bridge has four 12-foot travel lanes separated by a concrete median barrier. It is 1.9 miles long and includes a 12-foot pedestrian and bicycle lane on its south side. The new structure is approximately 85-feet tall at its highest point, thus eliminating the need for a drawbridge. The project was completed roughly 21 months after notice to proceed.
