Milton Madison Bridge
KYTC and INDOT

Contract Value :
Completion Date :
This project consists of a design-build bridge replacement on US 421 from Madison, Indiana to Milton, Kentucky. This contract originally planned for a 365 day closure with the use of a ferry boat. Walsh developed a design solution that practically eliminated the need for the ferry boat which had a cost of $25,000 per day for operation. This project’s approach includes building a new truss on the downstream piers while the existing bridge remains open to traffic. The existing piers are strengthened. The old truss is removed and the new truss is slid onto the strengthened existing piers. The total closure of the bridge is ten days; during which the approach ramps are connected to the exiting bridge and during which the new truss is slid into place.
