The Midway Airport Terminal Development Program was the largest public works project in the State of Illinois at the time of construction. The total program involved new concourses and terminals, concession stands, garaged parking, new taxiways, and improved roadways. The Airside Pavement replacement included the demolishing of existing terminals and concourses, the removal of existing parking lots, the removal of existing water and sewer piping, the installation of new water and sewer piping, and the replacement of new concrete taxiways and roadways. Continued access and use of the airport was maintained throughout the construction overhaul process, which took place over a 5- year schedule. The project’s scope expanded during construction due to various owner-initiated changes, including the addition of wastewater and lighting systems. The additional scope was within the project timeline to meet the owner’s goals.
