As part of the new 5th Runway for the City of Atlanta’s expansion program at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the I-285 Bridge Structures were the first design-build project of its size and complexity in Georgia. With the largest span length of any runway bridge worldwide, the runway bridge crosses the interstate’s present 10 lanes and leaves room for an additional 8-lane expansion. The first structure is approximately 1,200 feet in length and 500 feet wide. The second bridge is over 500 feet long and 220 feet wide. The bridge is able to support large aircraft like the Airbus A380, which weighs 1.3 million pounds. On May 16, 2006, transportation, civic, and aviation notables from around the United States gathered to celebrate the completion of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta 5th Runway project, considered the most important runway in America.
