This new high-level fixed-span bridge replaced an existing 1950s-era drawbridge and provides two 12-foot lanes, two 10-foot emergency lanes and two barrier-separated sidewalks. The primary purpose for the bridge replacement was to improve access for hurricane evacuations, vehicles traveling across the bridge and boats traveling beneath. The narrow channel under the old drawbridge was extended to allow for 125-feet of horizontal clearance, and the new structure allows for 65 feet of vertical clearance for boats to travel beneath.
