It's Takeoff for RDU's New Terminal

April 2009
The first phase of Raleigh-Durham International Airport's Terminal 2 opened for business this weekend. Construction began on the $570M Terminal 2 program in April 2006 to accommodate the ever-increasing number of travelers using RDU and efficiently guide passengers through ticketing, security, gates, and baggage claim. The Terminal 2 facility nearly triples the original Terminal C in size to 920,000 SF. Unique large arched wood trusses were used to create the rolling roof structures, which is finished with continuous stainless steel standing seam roof panels, some over 400 feet long. With 25 new restaurants and shops in this first phase, the terminal has been described as "convenience mixed with style."
This is the first terminal in the country designed and constructed since the 9/11 attacks. It includes a larger, more efficient federal inspection facility to process more international flights and passengers. A $3.6 million in-line, explosives-detection, baggage-screening system was installed to quickly detect and address potential threats.
Archer Western self-performed concrete, carpentry, and stainless steel finish work on this project.
